Breakfast

Porridge

In Central Europe and Scandinavia, people first discovered porridge. This food is typically a breakfast meal. Oats contain magnesium, iron and zinc, as well as the B vitamins. In total, porridge has an average of 50 calories. It is more on the sweet side, but porridge can top it off with honey, nuts or any food substance. This recipe isn’t originally suitable for vegans, but it will suit both vegans and vegetarians if you exchange the milk for plant-based milk such as oat milk.

1. Stove

2. Microwave

Option 1: Saucepan

INGREDIENTS

  • 40 g Oats
  • 250 ml Milk (any kind) or Water
  • Honey or maple syrup (optional)

METHOD:

  1. Mix the oats and the milk in a saucepan; make sure to keep a spoon on hand, so the milk doesn’t burn. Place the saucepan on the stove and heat the furnace onto 9.
  2. After a while, the milk and oats should start to bubble up. At this time, remember to begin stirring a bit and to turn down the heat to around 5 or 6.
  3. If the porridge you want should be more liquid, take it off the stove after around 2 minutes. You will know the consistency when you stir the milk and oats. You can either add the sweetener now whilst the porridge is still on the stove or after it has been served.

(If you want to add some frozen berries, cinnamon or nuts, feel free to do so)

  1. Once your porridge is a perfect consistency, you can take it off the stove and serve it in a bowl. If you wish, you can top it off with some banana, strawberries, blueberries or anything else of your choice.

Option 2: Microwave

INGREDIENTS

  • 40 g Oats
  • 250 ml Milk (any kind)
  • Honey or maple syrup (optional)

METHOD:

  1. Take a microwave-safe bowl and put the oats and milk into the dish. Place into the microwave for 1 minute. If the milk starts to bubble, press stop, stir and place it back in again. After a minute, take the dish out and stir the porridge. Careful; it may be hot.
  2. After you have stirred the oats and milk, place them back into the microwave for another minute. It should turn into one thick consistency. If you would like a slightly lighter and more liquid porridge, take it out of the microwave a bit earlier and astir to check if it is correct. If you, however, would like a thicker porridge, place it in for another 40 seconds and check.
  3. Once you have finished making the porridge, take out the pot and pour it into a serving bowl (or you can eat it from the dish). Now that the porridge is ready to eat, you can take your sweetener and pour as much as needed onto the porridge. Enjoy!
